Cranial Dystonia - Oromandibular Dystonia
Cranial dystonia is a term used to describe a neurological disorder that affects the muscles of the head, face and neck. Oromandibular dystonia affects the muscles of the jaw, lips and tongue. The jaw may be pulled either open or shut and speech or swallowing can be difficult. Spasmodic Dysphonia involves the muscles of the throat that controls speech. Also called Spastic Dysphonia or Laryngeal Dystonia, it causes strained and difficult speaking or breathy speech. Meige Syndrome is the combination of focal eyelid dystonia (Blepharospasm) and Oromandibular dystonia and sometimes Spasmodic Dysphonia. Spasmodic Torticollis can be classified as a type cranial dystonia.
Originating from a part of the brain called the Basal Ganglia; dystonia itself is a neurological condition affecting various muscles in the body. It causes an undesirable muscular contraction or twisting. In dealing with this disorder, and trying to obtain relief, many try eye injections of Botox, the “treatment of choice.”
As a person with Blepharospasm, the dystonia that affects the eyes, I tried eye injections twice. The treatments were six weeks apart and affected my eyes and the side of my face and thereby changed my smile. I stopped the injections. Later I found a natural whole food and nutritional supplements that nourished my brain and body. Within six weeks, my symptoms improved and so had my quality of life. This nutritional program helped me. Maybe it could also help you.
