Essential Tremor
Benign Essential Tremor is a neurologic movement disorder characterized by involuntary, fine rhythmic tremor of a body part or parts, primarily the hands and arms (upper limbs). In many affected individuals, upper limb tremor may occur in an isolated finding. However, it may also involve other body regions, such as head, voice, tongue or roof of the mouth (palate) and problems in articulating speech (Dysarthria). Tremor may also affect muscles of the trunk and legs. Usually tremors are active while the individual is performing a movement; in many cases it is not present while at rest. However, in advanced cases some have tremors even while at rest. In some cases essential tremor has been determined to be hereditary. It also may occur in childhood or adolescence, but it is most common in adulthood.
Over 20 years ago, I was diagnosed with another neurologic disorder called blepharospasm. It is evidenced by involuntary and excessive blinking, squinting, twitching or eye closure. In the most severe cases, the eyes are closed shut and even though the person may have 20-20 vision, the
patient is legally blind. It usually occurs after the age of fifty and is more prevalent in women.
The “treatment of choice” for blepharospasm is injections around the eyes, which paralyzes the muscles. It may last several weeks or months and then another round is necessary. Later, the patient may develop an immunity and it is no longer effective. Many years ago, I began following a nutritional program that dramatically diminished my symptoms. Maybe this program could help you with your movement disorder.
